Are we having a horror film rerun? It seemed only like recently
that the Jayson Blair scandal blew up at The New York Times. The
Harvard grad, young star writer, Nick Sylvester, is in hot waters for
fabricating material for his cover story, "The Secret Society of
Pick-up Artists" in this week's The Village Voice, as reported by the Associated Press. The Voice posted an Editor's Note
that included the writer's acknowledgement of the fabrication; the note
also indicated the writer's suspension. The writer has since
resigned from Pitchfork Media, an online music magazine, at the editor's request.
The entire episode is simply sad. It obviously takes brains to
graduate from Harvard, as this guy did, and he should have known that
his fabrication, which named an actual participant, would be
discovered. The Village Voice is even sadder for not firing the
guy on the spot. The story ended up on the front cover, for
crying out loud. Talk about eggs on their faces!
