THE worst kept secret in sports is finally out! After being left
twisted in the wind for 5 or 6 weeks, embattled NY Knicks coach Larry
Brown got the ax, as announced on NBA's website.
And now ownership is seeking to avoid paying the remaining $40
million on Brown's five year contract. Commissioner David Stern
will be the arbitrator in this dispute.
While an employer has the right to fire an employee for any reason,
honoring the terms of an employment contract and paying what's due on
it is a foundation of employment law. If the Commissioner allows
the Knicks ownership to "manufacture" any excuse to not pay the amount
due, in full, this would set a precedent for employment contracts in
the NBA, and possibly the other sports leagues as well. So I'm
squarely in favor of having Larry Brown receive the full $40 mil on his
contract.
