Ambitious or delirious? You could use either term for the 2006 State of the City Address
delivered by NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg last week. Defying
conventional wisdom, Bloomberg proposed a rather ambitious agenda for
his final term in office. The highlights
include creating and preserving 165,000 units of affordable housing by
2013, extending the $400 property tax rebate over the next three years,
reducing poverty, proposing a gun offenders registration act to require
offenders to verify their addresses with police, expanding charter
schools in the city, and banning all gifts from lobbyists.
Pardon me for being skeptical. While some of these proposals are
good ideas, particularly affordable housing, the City may not have the
resources to turn these ideas into reality.
