Last week, New York City's Transport Workers Union Local 100
(TWU) rejected the new labor contract by an agonizingly narrow margin
of seven votes, as reported in the New York Times
(registration required). For New Yorkers who endured a
business crippling transit strike back in December, the spector of
another strike, however faint and remote the possibility, is very
unwelcome news indeed.
In voting down the contract proposal, the deep divisions within the
union is now apparent to all. And clearly, there is a
militant group that strongly disagrees with union President Roger
Touissant's vision, and succeeded in getting the proposal rejected.
Before the MTA and the union goes back to the bargaining
table, this threshold question needs to be raised: who will represent
the union? Is Roger Touissant still the best man for the job?
