Commentary:
The New York Times published an Associated Press report today (registration
required) that leading internet search company Google has rebuffed the Bush
Administration's request for electronic data on its search requests.
The government sought all requests on Google's search engine
for an unspecified week, raising privacy concerns. Yahoo
confirmed its compliance on a similar government request, while
Microsoft dodged the issue (the AP article states that every other
search engine has complied, according to court documents).
My concern is that even if Google successful repels this particular
subpoena, it may not succeed in the near future. And since all
the previous searches are on file in electronic databases, the damage
is already done as far as invasion of personal privacy is concerned.
