With
much fanfare, the New York City Council elected its
first female, and gay Speaker-- Christine Quinn. Speaker
Quinn's acceptance speech is available here.
The City Council is the legislative branch of New York City
government, and makes laws that become enacted upon signature by the
Mayor. The Speaker is the head of the City Council, and
basically
keeps the legislative branch moving. Depending on your
personal
religious and political beliefs, Quinn will serve as the embodiment of
all that is right or wrong with the Big Apple.
