Commentary:
Recently, the President and CEO of RadioShack was forced to resign. According to the
Associated Press, the reason for
his resignation was lying on the resume. He indicated that he
had a psychology degree and a theology degree, when in fact neither was
true. But the guy did get a severance worth over a million
dollars, which may be more than what most college graduates earn in a
lifetime. This episode raises the question of what exactly is
needed to run a company---a piece of paper showing you graduated from a
so and so school? Or something more intangible and harder to
pin down on paper?
Despite the fact that employers will fire employees found to have lied
on their resumes, one may expect that "resume padding" by job seekers
will continue---for no other reason than to get a foot in the door.
