A Quinnipiac University poll
was released last week finding that a majority of New York City voters
would support the opening of a Wal-Mart store, by a margin of 51-37
percent. Interestingly enough, union households also support by
47-37 margin. However, 46% would require workers to be allowed to
unionize before allowing Wal-Mart to open in the City. Seizing on
its good fortune, Wal-Mart released a statement in response to the poll, noting the savings it provides and concludes that "Wal-Mart is good for America's communities."
This poll shows that while New Yorkers love a bargain, they wouldn't
necessarily compromise on principle--no union, no NYC Wal-Mart store.
