Last Friday, Brooklyn federal judge John Gleeson rejected the existing
system of party nomination convention of judicial candidates for New York State Supreme
Court as unfair, as reported in New York Newsday.
The court ordered the system to be replaced with primary
elections until Albany changes the selection process legislatively.
The problem with going through the primary process is that the judicial
candidates will have little chance of getting on the ballot without
party affiliation/support. They would have to
campaign, fundraise, gather signatures (by knocking on people's doors),
the whole nine yards. Unless the candidate has the deep
pockets of a Bloomberg, party nomination will still be in effect in
practice.
