Commentary:
Last week, National Intelligence Director John Negroponte caused a stir
when he revealed that almost 100,000 Americans are in U.S.
intelligence, as reported by the Associated Press.
The first question is how much did the chief "fudge" the number?
"Almost" is a round up. From what? 85,000?
75,000? 60,000? The guy clearly engaged in some obfuscation.
Interestingly, if you google "100,000 spies" you'll come across
international media coverage on this (from 2 particular countries).
The second issue is what do those spies do? How many in
undercover field operation? How many in support? Obviously
this is classified information that average folks like you and me won't
know. But to me, that's the more significant number---the %
breakdown in what our American spies do.
