The Local 813 of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the union representing NYC workers at Waste Management, Inc., a publicly traded company that provides private trash hauling service for businesses across America, is currently on strike.
If the strike lasts a long time (say a few weeks), it's going to be
nasty out on the streets. The reason is that most businesses in
the restaurant/food industry (think your local fast food joint,
pizzeria, restaurant, etc.) use a private hauler for their food waste
(some unethical businesses illegally dump commercial waste into
residential waste to avoid paying for private trash collecting).
So if the trash isn't picked up overnight, animals (stray cats,
dogs, raccoons, rodents, etc.) will go through the trash (by
biting/chewing/making holes in the trash bags) in search of food.
And the search will result in really, really stinky and messy
sidewalks. And as the weather gets warmer, roaches and ants will
join in the feasting too.
Let's hope that the strike won't last til summer!
